Llwynbedw - Wales August 15-23 2024

GROW A GARDEN FESTIVAL

Llwynbedw is a plot of land in wild West Wales, lived at and managed by a group of friends, including Matara Scott, alum of YIP14. From the impulse of bringing value to a YIP alum’s personal project. We decided to host the 2024 YIP gathering at Llwynbedw, naming it the Grow a Garden Festival.

The Grow a Garden Festival will be a 9-day get together. Blending practical projects, artistic endeavours and open spaces. Matara and her friends will lead us in a permaculture-inspired gardening project. Tristan, one of the land owners, will lead the construction of practical structures on the land. Simon, alum of YIP14, will lead a musical project involving the land: accumulating its sound, its story and the participants into recording a piece of music. But this doesn’t have to be all... Do you feel called to bring a project? We want to hear from you!

During our 9 days in Wales, we will camp on the fields of Llwynbedw, immersed in the mystical Welsh nature. We will cook delicious organic meals on a campfire. The days will be filled with singing, nature and community. The evenings will be enjoyed around the fire, with music, open mics, storytelling and cosiness.

We invite you to be a part of the Grow a Garden Festival from August 15th to 23rd at Llwynbedw, Pembrokeshire, West Wales. There is place for 40 YIP Alumn, so make sure to sign up on time!

Information

  • The accommodation for the event will be camping! Bring your tent, mats, sleepingbags and all that you need. We do not currently have the option of staying in any of the buildings on the land, many of which are currently derelict. If however, camping is not an option for you – please get in touch as there are a few local bnbs/ glamping sites nearby which might work for you. However, you would have to arrange your own lifts to and from the land if staying off-site (hire a car).

We have our very own borehole for drinking water. We will have basic hot showers, compost toilets. There is a river for some splashing about – but please don’t put any cleaning products into the river. Please note, that Llwynbedw is very much in its beginning stages as a place to host, so understand that our facilities are basic currently!

  • Getting to the UK

    - by plane: the closest airport is Cardiff, but cheaper options might be to fly to either London or Bristol, and then travel by train or bus to Llwynbedw (more info in the next heading: Getting to Llwynbedw)

    - from mainland Europe: there is either the Eurostar to London, or the ferry, or buses (Flix, BlaBlaCar bus, Omio etc)

    Getting to Llwynbedw

    - from London: take either the bus (National Express, Flix) to Cardiff, or Swansea, then finish the journey on the train (tickets at Trainline, or go directly to the provider Transport for Wales)

    - from Bristol/ Cardiff/ Swansea, take the train (book at Trainline) to Clunderwen (10 mins drive from Llwynbedw) or Narberth Train Station (17 mins drive to Llwynbedw), this train will either be direct, or have a change in Carmarthen

    - from the train station, await lifts to the land.

NOTE: When you have booked your travel, please send details to Matara Scott, as she will make a note of when people arrive at the train station, to then organise lifts to the land, as there are no reliable direct travel routes to the land. If you can organise arriving at the same time as friends, this is preferable to limit the number of lifts we have to do to and from the train station.

  • The cost of the ticket covers the ingredients three meals a day: breakfast, lunch and dinner, as well as tea and coffee (cooking and cleaning will be done YIP style by everyone at the event!). The food will be organic and local where possible, provided by our local fruit and veg provider C&M Organics and Essential trading for non fruit and veg. It also covers workshops that will be part of the timetable: for example morning yoga, music workshops, craft sessions, etc. It also covers lifts to and from the train station, firewood, gas for cooking, electricity costs for charging phones/ playing music.

  • In terms of keeping everyone safe, please bring your most caring lovely self! Respect people’s boundaries and state your own. If you don’t feel like participating in any of the festival events for whatever reason, this is okay – all activities are optional. This event is inclusive to all YIP alum, so please love and respect each other. This also means looking after the land for the whole 9 days - leaving no trace where you are camping and in the communal spaces.

  • We have first aid kits on the land, which will be placed in communal areas and on the campsite to use when necessary. We will also have a list of people who are first aid trained, so you know who to look for if you are hurt. Please let us know if you are first aid trained, so we can add you to this list. Emergency numbers in the UK are:

    999 (Ambulance service option)

112 (European Union emergency number, which will connect you to the same service)

  • Essentials:

    - Tent

    - Sleeping bag

    - Pillow

    - Sleeping mat

    - Clothing (for all weather options: waterproofs, outdoor footwear, gardening gloves, waterproof coat, hat, sunglasses, thick socks, clothes for working outside, swimwear, hiking gear)

    - Towel

    - Cutlery, mug, plate, bowl

    - Toiletries: toothbrush, toothpaste, sun cream, soap

    - Torch

    - Chargers, battery pack if possible (there will be charging points!)

    - Water bottle

    Extras:

    - Art supplies

    - Musical instruments

    - First aid kit (we have some provided, but more is always good!)

    - Snacks

NOTE: this list is not exhaustive, please bring all of the things you would usually bring for camping.

  • The nature of the Grow a Garden Festival is that there is the opportunity to bring your own project if you so desire. Please let either Simon or Matara know if you plan to do this, so we can support you in your endeavour! Unfortunately we do not have an unlimited budget, but we will try to accommodate you in the best way possible. Just contact us when you want to bring a project.

  • If you book a ticket and then realise you can no longer make it for whatever reason. Within one month before the festival (July 15th) you are entitled to a full refund. After this, due to our planning capabilities in terms of finance, we will no longer be able to refund your ticket. However, you can sell your ticket to another yippie. We hope you understand our decision with this, as we have to order food/ supplies in line with the number of people who have decided to come.

  • Arrival day is Thursday the August 15, leaving day is Friday the 23rd August. Please book your travel for these days, giving details of the timings to Matara Scott, so she can organise lifts to the train station, and you can make your travel on time! If you for some reason need to leave early, arrive late, please let us know this also.
